About Thai Massage
The theoretical foundations of most Eastern healing traditions are based on the belief that all forms of life in the universe are animated by a primordial life force. In the Indian yoga tradition, this force is referred to as prana – an invisible, silent force. Prana is obtained from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. It also circulates through certain pathways in the body, creating a network of vital life force essential for the existence of the bodily system. These energy pathways form the basis of Thai-yoga massage.
Thai yoga massage utilizes ten energy pathways. These pathways, called sen, are connected by pressure points – marmas. Massaging individual sen stimulates the free flow of prana. Stretching and pressure stimulation are the main means by which Thai-yoga massage achieves tension release and thorough body exercise. When the body is relaxed and “opened” in this way, energy flows much more easily, and this stimulated and strengthened energy flow helps alleviate common health issues such as
The origins of Thai massage date back to India 2,500 years ago when Buddhism began to spread. The founder of Thai massage is Jivaka Komarabhacca, who was a respected yogi and physician of the ancient Ayurvedic tradition. Traditional Thai massage developed over many centuries in the environment of Buddhist temples.
Although Thai massage is a firmly rooted national tradition, it’s difficult to speak of any standard form. Various masters have created their own methods and procedures. There are at least two main styles that can be traced to the teachings of the two most famous schools: northern and southern. The main difference between these styles is in the technique of working with energy pathways.
The northern style is also called the yang form because it is more vigorous in its approach. The southern school is referred to as the yin form because it is of a more relaxed nature.
Recently, there has been more frequent exchange between the north and south, and so the two styles are merging.
